Overview of Plant Tissues
Plant tissues are groups of specialized cells that perform specific functions, forming the structure and enabling growth in plants. Building on plant cell basics, tissues are classified into two main categories: meristematic tissues and permanent tissues. Meristematic tissues are responsible for growth, while permanent tissues provide support, transport, and protection once cells mature and lose the ability to divide.
This classification helps understand how plants develop from a single cell into complex structures. For example, in a growing seedling, meristematic tissues drive elongation, while permanent tissues form the roots and shoots.
Key differences:
- Meristematic: Actively dividing, undifferentiated cells.
- Permanent: Differentiated, non-dividing cells with specialized roles.
